Bob Dickinson was a lovely person, a passionate educator, a talented musician, and a very gifted artist. He mixed greens and purples and pinks that I couldn't copy, no matter how hard I tried. This portrait depicts him as he will always be to me: bearded, framed with a lion's mane of silver hair, draped in a beige painting jacket, wearing one of his bucket hats, and grinning at something ridiculous one of us just said in painting class. (Not pictured are his blue suede shoes.)
He is made of his dreamlike paintings:

The tree halo is a copy of a piece of art he wore: his tattoo of the Tree of Life. He loved that tattoo. When I was 12 I read the book Life by the Numbers that talked about fractals in nature, and it was intoxicating to me. It taught me that patterns can be observed, noted, and used to make predictions in the natural world. Patterns reveal order in what seems like chaos. This gave a great deal of comfort to my young anxiety- and depression-riddled mind, and it still brings me comfort today. I paint and draw to reveal to the viewer the patterns I find.
